Various types of Hamster's can be chosen. Since there are too many breeds, they are classified according to size from giant, medium, dwarf, rat-like and mouse like hamsters. Dwarf hamsters are the most common among these groups. Some most popular varieties of dwarf hamsters include Campbell's or Russian, Chinese, Roborovski, and Winter White Russian.
Feeding is easy as food pellets which are readily available at pet shops are hamster's main food. You can add milk in their diet especially for mothers and their young but make sure to remove it once it gets sour.
Play is also one important factor in caring for hamsters. Toys can also be purchased at pet stores. A wheel is most common but you can also add a hamster ball. These creatures are curious so it's best to choose a toy with numerous variations like openings, ladders, levelling, and tubes or tunnels.
Although they are social animals, it is best to store a single hamster on one cage. Only young hamsters can be kept together. The most popular types though, dwarfs tolerate being housed together specially as families. Unrelated hamsters caged in one may result to fighting.
Training a hamster for tricks requires patience. You have to be an expert in handling one first. It is not advisable to pick up a hamster by the neck. You can place one in a scurry first until he is used to it. Once trust is gained, you can start teaching him tricks.
If you are interested in breeding hamsters, important questions should be answered first like why? Where will the pups be kept afterwards? How is breeding done? When is it best done? What types are best bred? Most breed to get a desired color variation or to simply populate their cage with more hamsters. You can have them cared for yourself, give them away to interested owners, and can even have them sold. Breeding is done through paring. A pair is slowly introduced to each other until they mate. It is best done when they are at 60 to 90 days old. Breeding dwarf Hamsters since they are more popular and are easiest to care for among all hamster species.
